HOW TO SIT AT THE LORDS FEET :
Here is one
set of simple steps to take as you sit at the Lords feet in your own personal
communion with him.
- Find
a time where you are not distracted.
Early in the morning or late at night might be the best, depending on
what type of person you are. It
might be in the car as you wait for the kids to have baseball practice.
- Find
a place where you will not be distracted.
Get away from radios, televisions, computers, and telephones.
Have the secretary hold all calls, if that place is your office.
- Begin
with a time of silence and stillness.
Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
Start with a minute, and build up each day as you become more used to
doing this. It can be a shock
to our systems when we are so used to go!go!go!.
As Jesus to speak to you in the time you will set aside for him.
- Open
your Bible.
If you aren't sure what to read, I suggest a Psalm, or some place
in the Gospels or letters of the New Testament.
For example, take the letter to the Philippians. Read a chapter, or portion, or even just a few verses.
Reflect on what you believe those words are saying to you.
Sometimes it helps to
- Write
down your favorite verse.
- Write
your insights into the passage.
- Write
how you believe it applies to you.
- If
something strikes you, that is most likely Jesus speaking to you.
Pay attention to that, and pray about why those words hit you.
- Sometimes,
reading a devotional guide or book also allows Jesus to speak to us. Our Daily Bread is available at our church.
Books like My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers, or The Imitation of Christ by Thomas A Kempis, provide wonderful writings
that challenge and stir us.
- Spend
time in prayer. Reflect on what you read in the Scripture. Bring your
needs and concerns before the Lord, but also be quiet so that your heart can
hear what he might say to you. You
will be surprised at how the Lord can speak to your heart and life.
- Don't
rush this. Take 15-20 minutes or even longer!
- As
you develop this habit, you will find you long for it more, and it centers
your life. Be patient. It
will take time to develop this time if it is new to you.
Different days will bring different things.
