It's pointless to try and build up his elemental attacks when he thrives while wielding martial and ranged weaponry. The Hunter side job works with this skill and increases Hikari's access to different weaponry until you can get the Armsmaster job.

You'll need to visit job guilds in order to pick up licenses to set secondary jobs. You can change your character's secondary jobs at any time, so there's no need to worry about setting one and having it be permanent. Some of the secondary jobs compliment a character's stats and latent abilities better than others.

As mentioned earlier, the game is designed so that any character is viable right from the start, and you'll be able to experience all characters' stories on a single playthrough, so there's no wrong answers. Just pick the one that sounds most appealing and have fun!
